Shamcey Supsup, 3rd runner-up in 2011
Miss Universe pageant

MANILA, Philippines – One of the world’s most glamorous pageants held at the Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil has just ended, wherein Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup placed 4th and hailed third runner-up of the 2011 Miss Universe pageant.
The Miss Universe 2011 crown was given to Miss Angola Leila Lopes, as her distinct beauty and dazzling performance stood out among the rest. Lopes is so far, the very first title holder from Angola. She succeeded the 2010 Miss Universe title holder, Ximena Navarette of Mexico.
Supsup, on the other hand, is a place higher than her predecessor, Venus Raj, who was proclaimed 4th runner-up in the same pageant in 2010.
Among those who were part of Miss Angola’s entourage besides Shamcey Supsup include Miss Ukraine Olesya Stefano, as first runner-up; Miss Brazil Priscila Machado, as second runner-up; and Miss China Luo Zilin as fourth runner-up.
Meanwhile, Tony award winner and a Filipino singer-actress Lea Salonga was among the official telecast judges in this year’s Miss Universe pageant.
Other judges besides Salonga include Miss Universe 2003 Amelia Vega, Connie Chung, Vivica A. Fox, Helio Castroneves, Farouk Shami, Adrienne Maloof-Nassif, Isabeli Fontana and Italo Zanzi.
It was the American actress Vivica A. Fox who asked Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup with a question that goes, “Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person you love? Why or why not?”
Supsup then gave her reply by saying:
“If I would have to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love. Because the first person that I love is God, who created me. I have my faith and my principles, and this is what makes me who I am. If the person loves me, he’ll love my God, too.
Supsup’s answer appeared to be the online voters’ pick as manifested by the 7.5 per cent votes she got for the question-and-answer category, on top of the others.
Among the top 5 finalists, Supsup was the only one who answered the judge’s question in English, without utilizing an interpreter’s aid.
During the pageant, Supsup was irrefutably a consistent fan favorite.
Moreover, the Filipina beauty also ranked second in evening gown and swimsuit votes.
Taking part in the 2011 Miss Universe pageant are contingents from 89 countries, apparently higher than the 2006 pageant record with 86 contestants.
Likewise, it’s the first time in the history of Miss Universe pageant, wherein online fan votes were given weight in the competition.
Shamcey Gurrea Supsup has graduated magna cum laude at the University of the Philippines-Diliman with a degree in architecture. She was born in General Santos City on May 16, 1986.
Topping the Architecture Licensure Examination in July 2010 was among the highest achievements she previously got.
