Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose, or sugar, levels are too high. Glucose comes from the foods you eat. Insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose get into your cells to give them energy.

Type of diabetes:
Arrow Type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin.
Arrow Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, your body does not make or use insulin well. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in your blood.

Signs and symptoms:
Like a Star @ heaven Frequent trips to the bathroom
Like a Star @ heaven Unquenchable Thirst
Like a Star @ heaven Losing Weight Without Trying
Like a Star @ heaven Weakness and Fatigue
Like a Star @ heaven Tingling or Numbness in Your Hands, Legs or Feet
Like a Star @ heaven Blurred vision
Like a Star @ heaven skin that is dry or itchy
Like a Star @ heaven frequent infections or cuts and bruises that take a long time to heal

Treatment:
Type 1 diabetes:
Arrow Insulin is essential for strict control of blood glucose levels in type 1 diabetes. Tight blood glucose control is the best way to prevent major complications in type 1 diabetes including those that affect the kidneys, eyes, nerve pathways, and blood vessels. Intensive insulin treatment in early diabetes may even help preserve any residual insulin secretion for at least 2 years.

There are, however, some significant problems with intensive insulin therapy:

* There is a higher risk for low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
* Many patients experience significant weight gain from insulin administration, which may have adverse effects on blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It is important to manage heart disease risk factors that might develop as a result of insulin treatment.

Type 2 diabetes:
Arrow The major treatment goals for people with type 2 diabetes are:

* Treat all conditions that place the patients at risk for heart disease and stroke, which are the major killers of people with type 2 diabetes.
* Control blood glucose levels. The goal is to achieve fasting blood glucose levels of less than 110 mg/dL and glycolated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels of less than 7%. The objective is to reduce complications in small blood vessels and the nerve damage associated with diabetes.

An intensive multi-pronged approach is critical for reducing complications and improving survival rates in patients with diabetes. Intensive therapy includes:
text continues below

* Healthy lifestyle changes: Regular exercise; heart-healthy diet; quitting smoking.
* Controlling blood sugar levels. Monitor blood sugar and hemoglobin A1C levels. Oral anti-hyperglycemic drugs such as metformin are first-line drug treatments. Insulin may eventually be needed.
* Heart-protective drugs. These medications include various drugs to control high blood pressure (ACE inhibitors, diuretics, others) and cholesterol (statins, fibrates). Controlling high blood pressure is a proven factor in reducing mortality rates. Aspirin may help prevent blood clots and heart attack.

Diabetes Empty TYPE 1 DIABETES RISK IN KIDS LOWERED WITH VITAMIN D

Post by pegasus202 Fri Mar 14, 2008 8:02 am

Taking vitamin D supplements in infancy may help a youngster ward off Type 1 diabetes.Children were monitored from infancy to early childhood to see if vitamin D supplements made s difference to the risk of becoming diabetic. The risk of developing the disease was reduced by 29% in children who took extra vitamin D as compared to those who had not. Diabetes is a chronic condotion in which the body does not produce enough of the hormone insuli, or cannot make proper use of the insulin it does produce. The disease is most common among people.
