Chat personalities and types
In a chat room, you will witness all types of personalities from the sane to the insane, from the rational to irrational and from the well-grounded to the far-fetched. Although I do not like to stereotype or lump people into categories, the following are some of the dominant personalities I have experienced in the chat world.
Realists
These are the chatters that are totally honest in chat rooms about their lives. They often discuss way too much of their personal business with total strangers. They often seem to be emotionally needy and reaching out for acceptance from others. They seem to believe that the chat world (and probably the real world) is a kind and un-forbidding place. In chat, they are most definitely in for a rude awakening.
Mutes ad Watchers
These are the chatters who enter a chat room and sometimes say hello or say nothing at all and then remain silent. They just sit silently and watch others chat. More than likely in the real they are very docile, non-confrontational individuals who just kind of go with life’s flow. On the other hand, they may be chatting up a storm in private chat with another chatter. They are basically laid back individuals.
Passers
These are the chatters that just move from chat room to chat room. They sit and watch the conversation for a few minutes to see if anything interests them and then move on to the next room. They are similar to Mutes or Watchers, but will stay in the room for short periods of time, while a Mute or Watcher may remain in one room for hours.
Entertainers
These are the chatters that are full of life and full of jokes. They participate in chat whenever the conversation is light and jovial. If any type of argument or confrontation erupts in the room they leave immediately. These types
of individuals use chat solely as a form of entertainment and it is not an important part of their life. They are generally very happy individuals.
Teachers and Philosophers
Often you will find people in the chat rooms who are constantly spewing rhetoric about the quality of life on earth and the plight of humanity. To themselves, they are deep and hearty souls with full knowledge of life and all it encompasses. They are the types of individuals who believe that they are right all of the time and are very close-minded to the opinions of others. They like to impose their beliefs and ideals others and when others are not accepting of their views, they often resort to verbal attacks and harassment of those that oppose them.
Whiners
Whiners are those that are always complaining in chat constantly about the quality of their lives and the things that they feel they are lacking. Often in reality these are individuals are very emotionally needy and often don’t have anyone to turn to. They use chat as a place to vent. Like Realists, they tend to expose too much of themselves in chat and will often reveal things that are extremely personal and occasionally offensive to other chatters.
Lovers
These are the chatters that use chat solely as a means to hopefully meet people in person. They will usually have a nic that is sexually suggestive and their entire conversation in chat consists of pick-up lines. They are the ones who are normally into cyber-sex. Occasionally, you will see the types that discuss fetishism and perversions openly in a chat room. They usually enter a room and immediately ask questions to see who is of the opposite sex and where they're located. They will also ask if chatters would like to exchange photographs
with them. Often these types of chatters are married and sexually frustrated, immoral or mentally ill.
Haters
These are the chatters who seem to hate everything and everybody. They enter a chat room and immediately oppose the views of others while attempting to impose their negative views on others. They like confrontation and thrive on arguments and heated debates. Often their views are extremely negative and confined to gender or race. They have a tendency to verbally attack anyone that questions or opposes their views. They seem to use the chat room to vent about things that they cannot control in real life. For some reason, they seek control in the chat world and have often undergone trauma in their lives.
Poppers
Some people merely come into a chat room to use chat room graphics (called “pop-ups”). They are normally on a computer as opposed to a television-based internet source. They are usually computer enthusiasts who are really not that interested in chat conversations.
Seekers
These are the individuals that enter the chat world seeking something specific. Often they are lonely and seeking a mate. They are hoping that through chatting they will develop an on-line relationship that may lead to a meeting and hopefully a real relationship. More often than not, they end up very hurt and disillusioned. They tend to cling to every word typed and often misinterpret people’s actions in chat. A lot of times they take the words typed on the screen to heart. These are the ones who tend to fall in virtual love with other chatters. They create illusions and fantasies in their own minds, which often leads to disappointment and disillusionment when their romantic advances are rejected. Once rejected, they often resort to harassment and possibly stalking of the chatter which rejected them. Unfortunately, loneliness is very prevalent and many people use chat as an escape from isolation.
24/7 Chatter
There are some people who spend almost all of their free time in chat rooms. If they could, they would spend 24 hours, 7 days a week chatting. Often, like Seekers, they are very lonely individuals. Sometimes they are confined to the house because they have small children or possibly for medical reasons, but there are some who just truly like to chat. They would much rather chat than surf the internet, read or watch television. The difference between a 24/7 Chatter and a Seeker is that while a Seeker is searching for a mate or a friendship, a 24/7 chatter is just someone who truly loves to talk and perhaps has nobody to talk to. The only thing they are looking for is place to chat with other individuals. These types of chatters are often very intelligent individuals who have a lot to say. They are usually very opinionated and cocky and tend to hold themselves in very high esteem. They will occasionally brag on themselves and enter into arguments with other chatters when their views are opposed. Occasionally, a 24/7 Chatter will attempt to control conversations in a chat room and sort of appoint themselves as the rooms host by using the amount of time they spend chatting as justification for their attempts to control the chat room.
Cliquers or Chameleons
These are the chatters that are very quiet unless a Teacher or Philosopher whose views they endorse is present in the chat room. They tend to be very supportive of one particular chatter and will follow their lead. They are
very protective of the Teacher or Philosopher that they endorse. Like Teachers and Philosophers, they tend to constantly indulge in verbal altercations with other chatters and are rather annoying. The difference is that when
their Teacher or Leader is not present in the room, they have very little to chat about. These types of individual are followers in real life and often lack self esteem. Similar to the way that a chameleon changes to the color of
their environment, these types of chatters tend to change their views to be consistent with their Philosopher or teacher.
Often a chatter will fall into one or more of the above categories. AND WHICH ONE IS YOU????
