STOP ACNE
Not just a teenage affliction, pimples can crop up on adults, too. Most experts agree that acne is linked to heredity and hormone levels.
Contrary to popular belief, diet plays a relatively minor role in acne frequency or severity. But certain drugs, stress, industrial chemicals, and some bacteria can trigger acne episodes. Avoiding such triggers can be a first step toward minimizing or eliminating skin eruptions altogether.
Experts recommend the following to ease your acne problems:
> Keep all acne-prone areas very clean using soap and lots of water to rinse. Pat dry, don't rub or scrub skin.
> Try over-the-counter soaps or astringents designed to dry the skin.
> Wash the acne prone areas with lukewarm or tepid water, not very hot or very cold water.
> Try over-the-counter acne medications, especially those containing benzoyl peroxide, that facilitate skin peeling within the follicles of your skin.
> For severe or recurrent problems, ask your doctor about prescription acne medications and use them only as directed.
> Certain acne medications require you to stay out of the sun as much as possible.
> Don't mix over-the-counter and prescription acne medications.
> Don't cover acne outbreaks with bandages or tight-fitting clothing.
> Reduce stress and anxiety.
> Avoid acne "triggers," such as certain makeups, drugs, and moisturizers.
> Use non-comedogenic or fragrance-free facial preparations.
Consult your doctor if:
> you suspect a cyst or pimple has become infected or inflamed (red or purple, swollen, painful, or does not get better with home treatment; and if
> persistent acne is severe and leaves scars.
