-Most short-term coughs are caused by viruses so antibiotics will not help
-Paracetamol or ibuprofen can ease aches and fevers
-Increase fluid intake(hot honey and lemon can be soothing)
-Extra pillows can aid sleep (for children by raising the head of the cot or bed by 10cm)
-Steam or menthol inhalations can help
-Cough should resolve but can last for up to 4 weeks
-Stop smoking (and keep a child with cough away from smoke
