8 Coins and a fake
I have a collection of 8 identical rare coins. They have exactly same appearance and weight. Then I accidentally mixed a fake coin which is exact copy of the originals. Say, even under microscope it is the same as the originals. The only difference is, it is slightly heavier.
My question: If I use a beam balance to determine which of 9 coins is fake, what is the shortest way to do it? How many steps?

Re: 8 Coins and a fake
PUT FOUR COINS ON BOTH ENDS TO SEE WHERE THE THE FAKE COIN IS, THEN CHANGE EXTRA COIN TO CHECK WHICH IS HEAVIER, AFTER DETERMINING THE FAKE COIN ,PUT THE FAKE COIN AT THE CENTER TO BALANCE THE BEAM. I HOPE MY ANSWER IS NOT FAKE ADMIN KEEN!!!!

Put 4 coins on both end of the beam.if it is balance, change 1 coin and put the 9th coin.check.the heavier 4 and put two coins each.the heavier two put one coin each.the answer is there..
Step 1.Put 4 coins each on both side.if it is balance the answer is the 9th coin not in the blance beam. If not? We need 2 more steps.
1.the heavier 4 coins... make it 2 coins each on the blance beam
2.the heavier 2 coins put 1 coin each side...the fake one retrieved.

So the least possible steps is 3 using your procedure. I need more convincing answers

No im afraid not
Re: 8 Coins and a fake
Step 1:load the any 8 coin coins to a weighing scale 4 for both sides and if it is balanced then the 1 remaining coin is the fake one. If the 2 sides are not equal take the 1 coin in both sides at the same time if it is balance then the fake is one of the two which you took. But if the scale is still not balance then the fake is still on the weighing scale. As you take the good coin add them to the good coins that you removed from the scale.
step. 2 if the final two are still not balance, take 1 of those two and weight it against the separated good coins. if this time the scale is balance or if don't then at this time you can identify which is the fake one.
does my imagination is right keen?

Re: 8 Coins and a fake
weigh each coin on your hand (to feel which is heavier )as you put on the beam..... but it will take a long time ......

Re: 8 Coins and a fake

Re: 8 Coins and a fake
Admin keen i use 3 steps.
1st step. put 4 coins on each end of beam bal. That is 4=4 2nd step. 2=2 coins on both end then 3rd step. 1=1 coin on both end then remove 1 coin and place the last 1.
Or like this:
1. 4=4
2. 2=2
3. 1=1

Re: 8 Coins and a fake
1)i'll put three coins on each beam . ( three coins remained)
in this set up i may be able to determine where the fake coin is among the group of coins.
if the beam is balance, this means that the three coins being set aside consist of one fake coins and two real coins.
if the beam is not balance, the heavier side consist of a fake coin and two real coins.
this means we can locate where the fake coin is from a group of three coins..
2) from the group of three coins, (where 1coin is fake) put 1coin each on the beam that means 1coin is left..
from here the fake coin is revealed..
hope i am correct...sir keen..in any way i enjoyed it..

Yes, if they balance, third coin is the fake. If they don't, the heavier one is the fake. Problem is solve. It is a 2-step procedure only. Yo got it right eyeofthespy5.
