VASCULITIS

Vasculitis is a condition in which the blood vessels become inflamed.Not to be confused with varicose veins,which are enlarged veins,vasculitis presents in many different forms and can be very serious.
Blood vessels that become inflamed may narrow to the point that not enough blood can get to the tissues served by those vessels.Eventually,the blood vessels may become blocked.On rare ocassions,they may weaken and stretch,bulging into an aneurysm,which is a life-threatening condition.

SYMPTOMS OF VASCULITIS

Vasculitis can appear with any number of different symptoms because it takes so many forms.Some kinds of vasculitis affect mainly the hands and feet,others the head and neck; and some attack vessels in the kidneys or brain.Some types affect mostly people in their twenties,other affect mostly young women,smokers,old people,or people of scandinavian origin-the spectrum is wide.
vasculitis can affect almost any organ in the body-the skin,kidneys,gastrointestinal tract,joints,lungs,blood,nose,ears,eyes,brain and nervous system.Following are some of the varied symtoms:
* a raised purplish rush
* arthritis
* coughing up blood
* chest x-rays that seem to indicate pneumonia
* shortness of breath
* abdominal pain
* mouth ulcers
* anemia
* chronic sinus problems
* blurry vision
* frequent pinkeye
* headaches
* shooting pains or tingling in the arms and legs
* confusion
* change in behavior
* stroke
Vasculitis is a systematic illness, which means that in addition to localized, peoplealso feel sick,with overall aches and pains.They may have fever, suffer weight loss,fatigue and pain whose cause is difficult to pinpoint.
Depending on the type of vasculitis, it may disappear or it may have periods of messions followed by flare-ups occassionally it becomes a chronic problem.

CAUSES

What causes the inflammation of the blood vessels in vasculitis is not clear.It can happen spontaneously,or as an allergic reaction to a medication that has induced the production of antibodies.Occassionally it is associated with other auto immune disorders that a person already has-for example lupus,scleroderma, or rheumatoid arthritis, or in connection with certain blood cancers.

TREATMENT

Diagnosing and treating vasculitis may require a variety of test and specialist,depending on what part of the body is affected-dermatologist,cardiologist,pulmonologist and hematologist,just to name a few.Blood test x-ray,ct scans, ultrasoounds,EKGs and MRIs may also be necessary-again,depending on the symptoms.Most types of vasculitis are treated with corticosteroid.Low doses of chemotherapeutic drugs may also be useful.People on these medications have to be monitored regularly to keep an eye on potential side effects.
With early diagnoses and agressive treatment,the result is usually successfull.Once the condition is controlled by medication,drugs and dosages may gradually be lowered in the hope that the person will have a remission or be cured completely.Since promt treatment leads to the best outcome,and since it is impossible to tell if a person is in remission,hoe long it may last, or if she/he has been cured, a patient who has had vasculitis should continue follow-up care with his or her physician over the long term.
